3 Must-Try Variations on the Magnificent Mojito

mojito
Mojitos boast a light pop of mint and lime that make them very refreshing, especially when the weather is warm. You might be surprised to learn that this Cuban highball was originally used for medicinal purposes to treat scurvy and dysentery. Today, it has morphed into a popular cocktail that is said to have been one of Ernest Hemingway’s favorite drinks. And while the traditional mojito is delicious, there are some interesting and tasty twists on the mojito that you really should try, including the following:

Traditional Mojito

(Most variations are slight rifts on the traditional mojito, which is made in this manner)

  • 2 ounces white rum
  • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 8 fresh mint leaves
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 ounce club soda

Add the lime juice, mint leaves and the sugar into a cocktail shaker. Muddle the mint with the juice and sugar. Add rum and stir. Pour mixture from cocktail shaker into a glass. Add ice (leave about an inch of space from the top). Splash in club soda and stir. Garnish with a lime.

Blueberry Mojito

This recipe is very similar to the original mojito recipe, except that you will want to add in eight blueberries when muddling the mint leaves, sugar and lime juice together. Garnish your glass with a few blueberries.

Mango Mojito

This tropical variation is popular in parts of Florida and just requires that you substitute the regular white rum with a mango rum.

Strawberry and Lemon Mojito

  • 3 lemon wedges
  • 8 mint leaves
  • 2 strawberries, quartered
  • 2 ounces white rum
  • 1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • Club soda

Muddle the lemon wedges, sugar, strawberries and mint leaves with the juice in a cocktail shaker. Add ice and rum and shake well. Strain; then pour into a glass filled with ice. Add the fruit and mint from the shaker to the glass.
