Although cats spend a good part of their day sleeping, they do need regular physical activity and stimulation. When cats get bored, this can lead to behavioral problems, such as scratching up furniture and other household items. You can make sure that your cat stays happy and active with the following tips.

Set Aside Playtime

No matter how busy your schedule is, make sure that you set aside playtime with your cat. Whether you play right after work or before you go to bed, you should grab a toy or two and spend time with your cat. Have your cat chase after a feather wand toy that you’re holding, or see if he’ll chase after a toy mouse or a favorite toy. If your cat tends to get hyper at night when you’re trying to sleep, playing before bedtime is a good idea. This helps him burn off energy, so he’ll be less likely to run and jump around during the night.

Get a Cat Tree

Cat trees offer great ways to keep cats entertained. These items give cats a chance to climb and maneuver around, so they won’t do so on your furniture or cabinets. Place a cat tree near a window to give your cat a view of the outdoors for added stimulation. Keep in mind that many cat trees also serve as scratching posts, so your cat can sharpen his claws on those surfaces instead of your sofa. You can find cat trees in a wide range of designs and setups. Some are simple with two or three shelves for cats to sit on, while others have tunnels and other areas for cats to explore.

Rotate Cat Toys

Leaving cat toys around can help your cat stay entertained when you’re not home. However, your cat might get bored with the same toys around. You can prevent this by switching up the cat toys that you leave out in your home. Every so often, put out a few new toys for your cat to play with, and put the rest away for another time.

We see a lot of pups at our pet-friendly apartments in Phoenix, AZ. While it's never a good idea to give your dog table scraps, there are a few foods that are good for you and Fido, too. When you're giving your dog "people food," make sure you're preparing it in a way that's healthy for your four-legged family member.

Here are a few ideas:

Eggs

These protein-packed pockets of goodness can stave off hunger and keep you energized throughout the day. If you want to share your bounty with your canine, set some time aside to hard boil a dozen.

Humans: Chop hard-boiled eggs and add to salads.

Dogs: Hide medicine inside the egg whites, or simply set a whole hard-boiled egg on top of his food.

Pumpkin

Pumpkin is filled with healthy beta carotene (that's where it gets its vibrant orange hue). Beta carotene is converted into vitamin A, which is tasked with helping living organisms produce healthy skin cells and solid immune systems.

Humans: Go for a pumpkin-infused smoothie.

Dogs: Bake ready-to-eat pumpkin dog treats.

Salmon

Salmon is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which support positive immunity, healthy skin and luscious hair (or fur, as the case may be). Although it's probably not a protein you'll have on your daily menu at home, it's a great item to share with your pooch when the occasions arise.

Humans: Glaze the fish with honey and garlic to create a taste that's perfect for a full dinnertime meal.

Dogs: Be sure to set aside some salmon before you put the other ingredients to work. Baked or broiled salmon with nothing else on it is perfect for a dog that's deserving of a special treat.

Chicken & Rice

Chicken's a great protein that can make any almost any dish heartier. Pair it with rice and you've got a meal that'll last for dinner tonight and lunch tomorrow.

Humans and dogs: Boil thin chicken strips in water until they're thoroughly cooked. Prepare rice in the same water so it's already infused with the flavor of the chicken. Add barbecue sauce or interesting ingredients to your own plate. Your pet's treat won't require any additional seasoning.

Element at Deer Valley is a stunning apartment complex that comes complete with all the conveniences you'll need to feel comfortable, whether you're working from home or enjoying time off with your pooch. Take a look at the awesome amenities our Phoenix apartment community offers!

Having a pet in your Phoenix apartments is a wonderful luxury. But you also want to keep your apartment home looking as beautiful as the day you moved in. When a pet accident happens on the carpet, the resulting stain can be unsightly. Here’s how to effectively remove pet stains from carpet.

Step-by-Step Guide to Treating Pet Stains

1. Treat the stain as soon as possible. The sooner you treat the carpet stain, the better. Stains that are allowed to sit for days on end have a tendency to set. That makes it harder for you to remove them, even if you use the proper technique. If at all possible, you want to treat the stain while it’s still wet.

2. Put on a pair of inexpensive vinyl or latex gloves whenever you clean up pet stains. If your pet was sick at the time, it’s possible to contaminate yourself with bacteria in the event you have a tiny scrape or cut on your hands.

3. Use paper towels to clean up the bulk of the mess if there’s a lot of it. If the mess is still damp, you can also blot up the moisture with the paper towels.

4. Next, switch to a clean cloth and press down really hard with both hands to blot as much of the stain up as possible. Don’t rub, because that just causes the stain to spread.

5. In a clean bucket, mix 1/4 gallon of warm water with a cup of white vinegar. Stir gently with your gloved hand.

6. Pour a small amount of the vinegar-and-water solution over the stained area. Let it sit for about five minutes.

7. Now use another clean cloth to blot up the stain. Again, avoid rubbing if you can.

8. After the vinegar is absorbed, sprinkle baking soda over the entire area. The baking soda will finish absorbing the white vinegar, as well as any odor. Allow to dry for 15 minutes.

9. Finally, vacuum up the baking soda. The stain should now be gone. If it isn’t, repeat all the steps.
